Materials Explorers Orientation

Saturday, March 10
11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Arizona Science Center is proud to host the launch of Materials Explorers™, a free STEM support curriculum aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Be among the first educators to access this new program!

Materials Explorers™ incorporates project-based learning, pop culture and real-world connections to student experience, and exposure to potential STEM role models to engage and inspire students about science and math concepts.

Each Materials Explorers™ curriculum module includes step-by-step activity guides, grading rubrics, and supplemental readings with exploratory questions and answer keys. Educators who teach 3rd-12th are encouraged to attend one or all four sessions.

Materials Science of Superheroes

Session 1: 11:00 a.m.- 11:20 a.m.
See how you can use superheroes to teach your students about the elements that make up their world, and introduce them to “real-life” superhero scientists and engineers.

Additive Manufacturing

Session 2: 11:40 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
3D printing is becoming increasingly popular and accessible. Learn how to expose your students to the science concepts behind this technology through a simple, fun activity.

Biomedical Materials

Session 3: 12:20 p.m. - 12:40 p.m.
Materials and their properties help change lives every day. Explore the properties of solids and liquids and, using a simple craft experiment, get students thinking about materials that have properties of both.

Biomedical Materials—Middle to High School

Session 4: 12:40 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
This session targets teachers of middle to high school students. Use a fun activity to discuss polymers and their properties. Then, apply this knowledge to a discussion about medical devices and the importance of materials in real world applications.
