Taking the Bite Out of Scorpion Stings; Uncovering the Chemical Secrets of Venomous Creatures of the World

Dr. Leslie Boyer, Assoc. Prof. of Pathology at the UofA, VIPER Institute Director

Poisonous creatures are a vital part of our planet's intricate ecology, each with amazing chemical secrets from which scientists may learn.  Every type may pose a public health risk to people.  In Arizona and Mexico, the bark scorpion sting can cause severe nerve poisoning, especially in small children.  Mexican scientists and UofA VIPER faculty and students have uncovered the chemical secrets of the bark scorpion sting to create Anascorp®, for use in treating patients suffering the effects of scorpion stings.  Dr. Leslie Boyer will share her sleuthing adventures over a career dedicated to protecting people from venomous creatures.

Tiny Legos That Build Themselves: The Magic of DNA Nanostructures

Dr. Hao Yan, Prof. of Chemistry and the Center for Single Molecule Biophysics, ASU.

What if you dumped your Legos out on the floor and they started moving toward each other and built something all by themselves? The buildling blocks of life are sort of like tiny Legos, so small that millions of them could fit on the head of a pin. Let's explore how scientists are able to build

Bioscience Researchers, Scientists, Educators, etc. interested in participating in either program are encouraged to contact Carole Flores, Pathways Project manager at floresc@azscience.org.

The Bio Buzz series was made possible through a five-year Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health. This program will give students and the general public a glimpse into the human body, its parts and processes, and new advances in biomedical research and technology.
